If you are are collector its a great place to pick up a first edition comic book or find that rare Gi Joe figure that you swore you would find again after your Mom gave it away years earlier. Supercon Florida had over 50 different vendors exhibiting their wares. Japanese culture is a big part of the show with Manga and Anime t-shirts, videos, action figures, costumes and even candy like Pocky which is an incredibly delicious Japanese candy.
In attendance at the convention this year there were a number of Comic and Sci Fi dignitaries including:
Bruce Cambell of Evil Dead Fame, Ted Rami notable actor, Edi Gathegi from Twilight and Twilight New Moon. Dana Snyder (Master Shake) from Aqua teen Hunger Force, Daniel Logan from Star Wars Attack of the Clones, Richard Lepermentier from Star Wars, Peter Donald Badalamenti from Pirates of the Caribbean and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, B-movie actress extraordinaire Linnea Quigley from Return of the Living Dead and countl
ess other B movies, Stanislav Ianevski from Harry Potter and a number of other stars. This is a great opportunity for fans to meet these celebs face to face and get autographs. I was lucky enough to be in attendance to sit on the Q & A session with Edi Gathegi of Twilight fame. In addition to the actors a number of well known comic illustrators and writers were in attendance including comic book legend Allen Bellman, X-Men Forever writer Chris Claremont, best selling New York Times author Patrick Rothfuss and X-men Noir’s illustrator Denis Calero to name a few. If your even a casual fan of comic books its quite a treat to see these comic masterminds crafting their designs right in front of your eyes.
Many of the show guests dress up in costume (Cosplay) as their favorite comic book, scifi, anime, or fantasy character. This year there over $3000 in cash and prizes were awarded for the best costume. Cosplayers are passionate about the characters they dress up as. One of the winners at this year’s show spent approximately 6 months designing her costume. If you are designing a costume or just mixing and matching different costume accessories the show is a great opportunity to meet up others for tips, tricks and ideas to help you in your costume design process. In addition to workshops geared toward cosplay Supercon hosted a number of panel discussions and seminars for budding comic book artists, a writers roundtable discussion and even travel tips for those looking to visit Japan.
The show even featured a WWF style wrestling ring set up on the show floor where Comic and Sci Fi superheroes scrapped it out for the honor of becoming the champ of the Supercon world. Video games were also a focal part of the show with a number of rooms setup for gaming on every gaming console with over 50 games in total available to play including classic games like Donkey Kong and Pac Man. Gaming tournaments with prizes were held for Gears of War, Halo 3, Rockband, Madden Football and more.
Be sure and check out a local convention in your area.
